Why quarterbacks become scarce
In a 12-team 2QB league, 24 quarterback starting slots must be filled. With 32 NFL teams before byes, that leaves only eight other NFL starting quarterbacks before injuries and fantasy benches are considered. This arithmetic explains the pressure on the position without assuming a particular quarterback ranking.
A superflex league can create similar demand because managers often prefer a quarterback's expected points. But it has an escape valve: you may use another eligible position. That distinction matters when choosing a backup, evaluating a trade or surviving a bye week.
Do not automatically start any quarterback
Use your scoring system and the specific player's outlook. A quarterback facing a reduced role or uncertain availability is not automatically better than a strong eligible receiver or running back. Six-point passing touchdowns, interception penalties and rushing scoring can also change the comparison. Positional eligibility is a constraint, not a forecast.
A practical roster plan
- Count how many QB-eligible starting slots the entire league needs.
- Check shared bye weeks and whether a third quarterback is obtainable at a sensible cost.
- Keep an eligible non-QB contingency for superflex, but not as a substitute for a required QB slot.
- Value a waiver quarterback relative to your league's remaining pool, not a generic 1QB ranking.
- Use the dedicated QB slot for the earlier quarterback and the flexible slot for the later one when eligibility and locks permit.
When to choose each format
For a new league, superflex offers quarterback importance with more lineup flexibility. Strict 2QB makes acquiring and retaining quarterback depth more demanding. Neither is inherently better: choose rules that fit league size, manager experience and how active the group wants the waiver market to be.
